Alex

Thirteen Reasons Why

Alex is presented through the consequences of a list and the connections that follow it. In Hannah’s account, his act of writing her name opposite Jessica’s helped turn a crude school joke into part of the chain of events documented on the tapes; later, his name becomes one of the links Hannah traces through a crowded map of relationships and incidents.

The List and Its Consequences

Hannah addresses Alex directly as she reviews the names and stories represented on the tapes. She argues that every documented event might have been avoided if Alex had not put her name on the list. In her telling, Alex needed a name to place opposite Jessica’s, and Hannah seemed an easy choice because Justin’s earlier actions had already left her with a sexualized reputation at school. She casts Alex’s list as an initiating link in a snowballing chain, while recognizing that its effects extended far beyond the act of making it.

The account does not say that Alex intended those consequences. Clay objects that the list was a joke and that Alex had no idea how deeply it would affect Hannah. The contrast between Hannah’s focus on the harm set in motion and Clay’s emphasis on Alex’s lack of foresight leaves intention and impact distinct: the list could be meant as a joke and still contribute to a damaging social climate.

A Node in Hannah’s Map

As Hannah tries to make sense of the people and incidents behind her tapes, she describes finding at least three dozen names and drawing connections among them. She circles Justin first, draws a line from him to Alex, then circles Alex and connects him to Jessica, bypassing names that do not connect to other incidents. Alex therefore occupies a structural position in Hannah’s account: his name is not merely another item on the list but a junction in the sequence she constructs.

The connections deepen Hannah’s anger and frustration, which repeatedly turn to tears and then back to anger as she discovers another link. When she reaches Clay, whose party she attended, she draws a line backward to a previous name. The map’s backward movement makes the stories less like isolated grievances than a network in which an earlier action can lead into later encounters and harms.

The Tapes Reach Their Listeners

After Hannah’s death, Tony decides that the people named in the tapes must hear what she has to say. He explains that he went home early on the day he learned she was missing, stayed away from school, and needed several days to pull himself together. When he returned, Justin looked devastated, and Alex did too. Tony judged that most of the people involved deserved to hear Hannah’s account, and set about ensuring that the tapes would continue along their chain.

Tony identifies Clay as the listener who took his Walkman, which made it easy to know that Clay had the tapes. This transmission arrangement gives Alex’s place in Hannah’s story a second dimension: he is both a name implicated in the earlier chain and one of the listeners whom Tony expects to confront the account. The tapes’ rule is to rewind them after all thirteen sides and pass them on to the next person; Hannah warns that copies exist and may be released publicly if the package fails to make its way through the group.

A Network of Stories

Hannah frames the tapes as a sequence of connected stories rather than a collection of independent episodes. She says that every event documented might not have happened without Alex’s list, while her drawn lines trace relationships among Justin, Alex, Jessica, and others. Clay later describes the party as the point where the stories knot together and the knot grows more tangled. In that structure, Alex’s significance lies in the way an apparently limited act feeds into a wider chain of reputation, relationships, and consequences.

The evidence offers no account of Alex explaining the list or responding directly to Hannah’s accusation. His character is instead encountered through Hannah’s retrospective judgment, Clay’s defense of his unknowing intent, the map’s connections, and Tony’s observation that Alex was visibly affected after Hannah disappeared. Those differing views preserve an important distinction: the tapes make Alex’s place in the chain legible without claiming that he foresaw where it would lead.
